Fresco

illustration for advertising

In 2019 Adobe reached out and commissioned me to create a piece for their new upcoming app - back then called Gemini.

Honestly, this was one of the most perfect briefs I could ever imagine. They asked me to find a drawing I did as a child, and recreate it later, as an adult and professional illustrator, using their brand new iPad drawing app.

I decided to remake this drawing I made on my dad’s Microsoft Paint when I was 7 y/o.

Here are a few other of the digital drawings I did as a child, that I considered for the remake.

Process

It started with a quick sketch to outline composition, then black and white shading to define light and dark areas. The underdrawing was super rough to give me space for flexibility. After the composition was reworked (it became a wider shot) I started laying out color, while some linework elements (like the flowers at the bottom) were still not finished. I was struggling with those, and wanted to define them once light and dark areas created a natural movement of the eye.

The entire illustration was created in Adobe Gemini (later to be named Fresco) app.
I used an iPad Pro 13” first gen and an Apple Pencil, also first gen.
